Questions

When does the 50% discount apply?

For an Australian resident individual, the discount applies when you owned the asset for at least 12 months before the CGT event. The day you acquired it and the day of the CGT event are both excluded, so a sale on the anniversary is too early. Where there is a contract, the CGT event is the contract date.

Does a capital loss reduce my salary?

No. A net capital loss is not deducted from other income. It can be carried forward against later capital gains. This page estimates one asset, so a loss here reduces the extra tax to zero and does not change the tax on your other income.

Who is this for?

Resident individuals only. Companies do not get the 50% discount. Trusts and super funds use different discounts. The main residence exemption, indexation for assets bought before 21 September 1999, and capital losses from other assets are not applied.
