HECS and HELP repayment calculator

From 2025–26 the compulsory repayment is marginal. Nothing is due at or under the minimum threshold. Above it, only the income over the threshold is charged, until the top band, which is 10% of the whole repayment income. On $80,000 in 2026–27, with no salary sacrifice, the repayment is $1,570.80.

Tax

Claiming the tax-free threshold changes the estimate of tax withheld. A resident’s year-end tax still includes the threshold. Foreign residents and working holiday makers do not get it, and they do not pay the Medicare levy.

Super
Family, fringe benefits and losses

Spouse income is used for the family Medicare levy and the Medicare levy surcharge test. Reportable fringe benefits, investment losses, salary sacrifice and exempt foreign employment income are added to HELP repayment income.

That is the ATO PAYG formula (Scale 2) on $6,666.67 gross, about $17,736 a year. Take-home above is the year-end tax, Medicare and HELP. Withholding is what a payslip usually takes out, and the two are not the same number.
